Machine learning approaches to lung cancer prediction from mass spectra.
We addressed the problem of discriminating between 24 diseased and 17 healthy specimens on the basis of protein mass spectra. To prepare the data, we performed mass to charge ratio (m/z) normalization, baseline elimination, and conversion of absolute peak height measures to height ratios. After preprocessing, the major difficulty encountered was the extremely large number of variables (1676 m/z...
متن کاملCombinatorial approaches for inverse metabolic engineering applications
Traditional metabolic engineering analyzes biosynthetic and physiological pathways, identifies bottlenecks, and makes targeted genetic modifications with the ultimate goal of increasing the production of high-value products in living cells. Such efforts have led to the development of a variety of organisms with industrially relevant properties. However, there are a number of cellular phenotypes...
متن کاملCombinatorial Approaches for the Trunk Packing Problem
In this thesis we consider a three-dimensional packing problem arising in industry. The task is to pack a maximum number of rigid boxes with side length ratios of 4 : 2 : 1 into an irregularly shaped container. Motivated by the structure of manually constructed packings so far, we pursue a discrete approach. We discretize the shape of the container as well as the set of possible box placements....
متن کاملPOSITIVE AND NEGATIVE ION MASS SPECTRA OF RING - SUBSTITUTED NITROBENZENES
The 70 ev positive and negative ion mass spectra of ring-substituted nitrobenzenes were studied. The influence of the substituent group on the fragmentation modes of the molecular ions is discussed. The effect of pressure in the formation of negative ions was also studied. As expected, the ratio of fragment ions to negative molecular ions decreased with increasing pressure in ion source.
متن کاملCombinatorial approaches to novel proteins.
The number of naturally occurring protein sequences is merely a tiny fraction of all possible protein sequences, hence there is little doubt that nature has not explored all of protein-sequence space. In general, proteins found in nature are compactly folded, resistant to proteolysis, rich in secondary structure, exhibit cooperative unfolding behavior, and possess a defined oligomerization stat...
